Pokémon Red and Blue were the games that started it all. It established the formula that later games would follow - catching and training Pokémon, battling 8 Gym Leaders to collect their badges, and battling the Elite 4 to beat the game.

The region your character travels around in is called Kanto (although it did not gain this name until Gold and Silver were released).
There are 150 Pokémon obtainable in the game, along with the 151st Pokémon, Mew, who can only be obtained from a glitch in the game or by going to a special Nintendo event.

Certain Pokémon can only be found in Blue and certain Pokémon can only be found in Red. That is the only difference between the two games.
